Chicago is one of the few American cities that has already taught itself to gather by the million and look up. The Air & Water Show fills the lakefront every August. Navy Pier has been putting fireworks over the water on a published schedule all summer for decades. This is a city with the habit already formed, which is the hardest part of the sell everywhere else.
It also has the geography. Lake Michigan gives an open, unobstructed stage directly in front of a shoreline built for spectators, and water is this medium’s favorite collaborator, doubling every formation in the reflection. Grant Park turns the same trick with the skyline instead of the lake. Northerly Island is a peninsula that was literally repurposed into a place for crowds to gather outdoors. No ticketing, no sightline charts, just geography doing the production design.
And over all of it sits some of the most carefully managed airspace on earth. O’Hare’s Class B covers the metro, Midway layers the southwest side, and the lakefront carries its own traffic.
